Salted Milk Tea

I recently had the opportunity to try Mongolian salted milk tea from an instant powdered packet, and it was quite an unexpected experience! Coming from a background where tea is usually sweetened or enjoyed plain, the salty flavor really caught me off guard. At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of it—it’s not every day that you sip a tea with such a savory twist!

As I took my first sip, I noticed the creamy texture of the tea, which I liked. The saltiness was the star of the show, and it created a completely different flavor profile from what I’m used to. It wasn’t overpowering but definitely prominent enough to make me pause and think, “Wow, this is different!” It felt like sipping a warm, cozy broth, rather than the typical sugary or herbal teas that I’m more familiar with.

The saltiness pairs with the rich creaminess of the milk made for a unique experience. I found the salted milk tea oddly comforting, like it was nourishing in a way regular tea just isn’t. After a few more sips, I began to appreciate its subtle depth, as though it was giving me a glimpse into Mongolian culture—where this tea is traditionally consumed to provide warmth and sustenance in cold climates.

I got it at a restaurant at Kuchai Lama, Inner Mongolian Restaurant. The boss told me you shouldn’t use boiling hot water, 80 deg celsius would be the best. He also stirred it longer than required to create foam and blend it more air for smoother texture.

I couldn’t help but chuckle at how much my expectations were flipped. It’s one of those tastes you’re not sure about at first, but it grows on you with each sip. Would I drink it every day? Probably not, but it was definitely an experience worth having. Now, I feel like I’ve tasted a small part of Mongolia, and that’s something I’ll remember fondly!
