Restoration Process for Industrial Shafts: Dechroming, Welding, Hard Chrome and Polishing

Industrial shafts are critical components in many machines, where surface condition and dimensional accuracy directly affect performance and service life. Our restoration service provides a complete refurbishment solution for shafts up to OD 200 mm and 1500 mm in length, returning worn or damaged components to reliable operating condition.

Dethroning

The process begins with dechroming. Existing hard chrome is chemically stripped to remove worn, cracked, or flaking layers without damaging the base material. This step ensures a clean and uniform surface, allowing accurate inspection of the shaft for wear, scoring, corrosion, or dimensional loss.

Welding and repair

If damage or excessive wear is found, welding and metal build-up are performed. Using controlled welding techniques, material is restored to the affected areas. The shaft is then machined to the required pre-finish dimension, ensuring proper roundness and alignment. Minor defects are corrected through surface touch-up to achieve a smooth and consistent base for the next stage.

Hard Chrome Plating

Hard chrome plating is then applied to rebuild the surface to the specified thickness. Hard chrome provides excellent wear resistance, low friction, and improved corrosion protection, making it ideal for hydraulic cylinders, rollers, and precision rotating components.

Polish and complete

The final step is precision grinding and polishing. The shaft is ground to the required final diameter and tolerance, followed by fine polishing to achieve the desired surface finish. This ensures smooth operation, proper sealing performance, and extended service life.

Through this controlled restoration process, worn shafts can be returned to near-original condition, reducing replacement costs and minimizing equipment downtime while maintaining reliable performance in demanding industrial applications.
